Death by RedBull!

Why, oh why, are people so gullible?

The other day, I had mentioned to someone that I drink RedBull everyday and my friends response was, "Oh my god, that stuff is soooooo bad for you!". When I asked why, she responded, "I don't know someone just told me that it's bad for you and it is!". Then someone else chimes in with, "Yeah, a bunch of people have died from just drinking too much RedBull!". Um, yeah. Let me guess, your friends, sisters, ex-boyfriend sat behind someone on the bus that was talking about knowing someone's brother that died from a RedBull overdose.

People seriously believe anything they hear, don't they...If you're going to argue with me, please know what you are talking about. At least make some sort of effort to aquire some knowledge about something before you claim to have an opinion about it (this extends into politics too, but I'm not about to touch that one). RedBull is just re-marketed soda. Here are the ingredients:

~Water
~Sucrose - a two-part sugar made of glucose and fructose. Known as table sugar or white sugar, it is found naturally in sugar cane and in beets.
~Glucose - a simple sugar made by the body from carbohydrates in food.
~Sodium Citrate - sodium citrate helps maintain pH levels in soft drinks.
~Taurine - a colorless crystalline substance obtained from the bile of mammals (you are a mammal, you produce Taurine, it's natural dummy and no, you can not OD on it).
~Glucuronolactone - a naturally-occurring metabolite, a carbohydrate produced by the human metabolic system.
~Caffeine - Redbull contains only 80mg of caffeine, less then 1/3rd of the caffeine you'll find in a Starbucks coffee.
~Inositol - A sugar-like vitamin B-factor is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol & fats; vital for hair growth & aids in brain cell nutrition.
~Niacinamide - Another name for vitamin B3.
~Calcium Pantothenate - Another name for vitamin B5
~Pyridoxine HCL - Another name for vitamin B6
~Vitamin B12 - Vitamin necessary for normal metabolism of nerve tissues and is active in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism.
~Artifical Flavors
~Colors

So, please, do tell me which of these ingredients are bad for you and/or will cause eminent death.

58 Shenanigans:

At 9/28/2004 1:01 AM, Blogger Lever had the nerve to say...

This is my theory...

On its own Red Bull is OK. People with caffeine intolerance/sensitivity should be careful, I think labels on these drinks do mention this.

Now, are you sitting comfortably? I shall digress a little...

My girlfriend went to a 'health farm' for a week - she used to be fit, now she's just not fit. One of the things they advised her was to get a heart-rate monitor and use it during exercise.

One day I took her for a bike ride, but a relatively easy one. She wore her heart-rate monitor and we did a small hill climb. By the top she looked awful - her monitor was going nuts and her heart rate was 198 !!!

Now if your max heart rate is 2 and a half times your resting rate then 80 times 2 and a half is dangerously close to what she was approaching.

So, I reckon that if you took this heart 'condition' (through lack of fitness, over-exertion or whatever) coupled with caffeine sensitivity could be just the sort of scenario that *might* lead to pushing your heart to the limit and *possibly* over the limit.

I used to drink fresh coffee every morning but on the stronger stuff I used to 'climb the walls' - so no RB or caffeine for me :)

Right, Lever, you are exactly correct. It just drives me nuts when people say "RedBull is soooo bad for you", when they should be saying something along the lines of "Caffeine is bad for people that are caffeine intolerant/sensitive". RedBull isn't bad for me. I'm not caffeine intolerant. =)

red bull may kill you, and it is un healthy, u should not frink 2 much of it, of drink it with vodka

At 3/09/2007 8:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous had the nerve to say...

A lot of alcohol lowers your heart rate, vodka often more than others. In general mixing uppers and downers can do a lot of crazy things to your body, it confuses your brain. You can die from taking 20 shots depending on what you have or haven’t put in your body and sometimes Red Bull can significantly alter your thought process – like a mild amphetamine – to drink it with any significant amount of toxins in your body can be dangerous. Whether it be prescription meds (anti-depressants and some other MAIOs or amphetamines) or recreation drugs, Red Bull crosses that line from regular consumer grocery to something people should be cautious of when mixing with certain drugs or activities. Also anything in excess is not good for you – drinking 10 a day puts you at an EXTREAMLY high dosage of some vitamins and things like taurine – way too much in fact. 10 cokes a day is bad for you no doubt, but it doesn’t contain nearly 30 times the amount of B6 vitamins your body needs and quite frankly well over what it’s made to handle.

80mg per 100mL means 160mg per can, which is more than most coffees. Listing the ingredients of red bull along with your opinion of each is useless, how about some facts? at least, the correct numbers...

Where did I say that redbull has 80mg of caffeine per 100ml? Redbull has 80mg of caffeine per 8.2 ounce can.

i use red bull when it comes to revising for exams. it really increases my concentration. i don't know if it's a placebo effect, but i dont care, it helps me focus and remember information. but hey, i only drink 1 can/day max. drinking more takes you way over you RDA of many substances. too much of anything is bad for you. drink responsibly.

hey , well im doing an assignment on this for school and to let you know 1 red bull aint that bad nor 2 or 3. But when you start getting higher than that it gets serious. it has an amount of caffeine in it which acts as a stimulous to your heart and makes it beat faster. Its like after running 10 km your heart rate sky rockets. and yeah u can die fro0m heart fail and attacks. Gets preety serious but yeah 1-3 aye ok!

ummm... its funny how u ask people to know what they are talking about before giving there opinion but from what i can tell you no much less. since when has artificial coloring and artificial anything been good for you? Red Bull is soooo good for you that Health concerns over the Red Bull energy drink upheld a French ban on the product aswell as in denmark and in britain pregnant women were warn not to have the drink for the risk of miscarriage due to the high levels of caffeine. Did you now that there's a law that prohinbits any state to require any company to warn against cancer causing ingredients in the product they sell. are you also aware that companies are not rquired to mention all the ingredients used. the best thing is water and anything homemade. do more research because apparently the information you have is superficial its only the tip of the ice burg, put a little more effort into your research and dig a little deeper there's lot of information out there. And remember, its obvious that Red Bull is going to defend its product and tell you that it gives you wings, anything to keep people like you buying it. I am not convinced that any processed food is good for me.

ha. what a great blog. I love RedBull and drink it all the time. I do not think drinking a couple a day does anything. Coffee is much worse for you. I actually drink a Redbull before I work out and my heart rate hits about 180. But my heart rate hits that even when I don't drink a Redbull before the gym. But keep in mind I am 23 and that is after I have been sprinting at 11 mph for a couple minute. Don't knock it til you rock it. Redbull kicks ARS

OK, you free-range chicken-eater or only organic vegetable nut. I am a chemist who has worked in food chemistry, and I fully stand behind the FDA's stance on this issue. Things like this should be taken in moderation. A can of Red Bull is no worse than the 2-3 cans of Cola most people drink every day. You probably only drink bottled water. Did you know that tap water is better regulated and in most cases much healthier than bottled water. Oh, and about the law about cancer warnings, just because states can't mandate such a law doesn't mean the Federal Government doesn't look out for it's citizens. Look at packs of cigarettes. Get YOUR facts straight!

At 7/20/2007 2:51 AM, Anonymous Ecologist had the nerve to say...

The caffeine – 80mg per can, more than three times what’s in the same amount of Coke, but a similar amount to a cup of strong coffee – produces the trademark ‘buzz’. But sugar is the only ingredient in Red Bull that actually supplies ready ‘energy’ – and, being refined sugar, the ‘high’ is at best short and unsustainable and can, with continued consumption, depress immunity and wreak havoc with the body’s own energy-producing systems. To put Red Bull’s sugar content into perspective, the UK Food Standards Agency defines a high-sugar product as containing 10g per 100g. Red Bull contains 11.3g per 100g – a mighty 28g of simple carbohydrates per can.

Added to all this caffeine and sugar are the amino acid taurine (also known as 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) and a rather mysterious carbohydrate called glucuronolactone, plus a range of B-vitamins (most in amounts too small to be considered therapeutic).

Taurine occurs naturally in meat and fish and is involved in several of the body’s metabolic processes. Omnivores on a good diet get all they need from food. There is no Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for taurine and no authority has identified what the maximum safe daily intake is. But data from the Austrian National Food Authority suggests that the amount of taurine in just two cans of Red Bull is around five times that in an omnivorous diet. Similarly, intake of glucuronolactone (a metabolite, or breakdown product, of glucose) from two cans of Red Bull is in the order of 500 times what humans would normally get from food.

Although taurine has a calming effect on the central nervous system and lowers blood pressure, these effects need to be judged in relation to the caffeine in Red Bull, which has the exact opposite effect, and the potential havoc that combining these ingredients could play on the body. Each of the ingredients in Red Bull clearly has the capacity to produce its own adverse effects; but they can also interact. Given this, it is all the more amazing that there is no long-term research on how sugar, caffeine, taurine and glucuronolactone might interact in the body.

Implied health warnings

This has worried several health authorities around the world. Red Bull has recently been banned in France. A threatened ban in Turkey was narrowly averted when the company reformulated its product there, approximately halving its caffeine content. In Sweden, Denmark and Norway, Red Bull is a medicinal product; and in Japan, until recently, it was available only in pharmacies. In Canada, where it has only relatively recently been allowed on sale, the product carries the warnings: ‘Not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, caffeine-sensitive persons or to be mixed with alcohol. Do not consume more than 500 ml per day.’

No warnings are put on the can in the UK except the one required by EU regulation, that all drinks (except tea and coffee) containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre must state ‘high caffeine content’ on the label.

Part of the concern is that while Red Bull is marketed as a healthful drink, it doesn’t do anything to nourish the body or replenish it after physical exertion. In fact, because of the drink’s high caffeine content, it can be dehydrating. For a person engaged in heavy physical activity, adding Red Bull can be a lethal mixture. A small number of people have died from heart failure after combining Red Bull with physical exertion and, while no direct causation has been attributed to Red Bull, the dehydrating effect of the drink combined with exercise has been mooted as a major strain on the heart.

Combining Red Bull with alcohol is similarly risky. A recent study in Brazil found that college students didn’t perceive themselves to be as intoxicated as they really were. The study indicated that drinking alcohol and Red Bull together significantly reduces the perception of headache, weakness, dry mouth and impairment of motor coordination.

Bull for a frantic generation

Red Bull has always maintained that its product is entirely safe. The company points to the fact that its drink is widely consumed and no published research has ever shown any link between harmful effects and Red Bull – on its own or with alcohol. This is accurate, but not entirely truthful. No studies have been conducted that might properly examine the potential adverse effects of regularly drinking Red Bull. So while the company can say there are no data, gullible guzzlers should not assume that the absence of data justifies a claim of no adverse effects.

The prospect of energy in a can is seductive and such is the desire of so many people today to feel some sort of buzz, that each year, people in 100 countries guzzle around two billion cans of this sugary brew. It’s probably still most popular in clubs and bars, where tired dancers believe that mixing it with vodka will help them party the night away. But it can also be spotted in the hands of feckless teenagers and sleepy commuters on their way to school or work – a sad image far removed from the performance-enhanced athletes whom Red Bull regularly sponsors.

Red Bull may be a sales phenomenon but it is also a sad metaphor for a generation that is dead on its feet. In a society this energy-poor, maybe it’s time to stop reaching for the blue and silver can, and reach instead for a lifestyle that doesn’t demand us to be 24/7 automatons and that sustains, rather than drains, our essential vitality.

Ingredients

Sucrose and glucose: Simple sugars. They are metabolised quickly by the body and produce a quick energy burst, followed by a deep energy deficit. High intake of sugar raises blood fat levels and leeches essential minerals such as copper, chromium and zinc from the body, leading to deficiency diseases, immune system impairment and even insulin resistance.

Taurine: Amino acid. No human studies have examined chronic toxicity associated with long-term intake of taurine. In animals it can produce a decrease in body weight (a sign of toxicity) and dehydration. In rats and guinea pigs, high intake is associated with liver dysfunction. Other evidence suggests that even relatively small doses of taurine can enhance the toxicity of industrial pollutants such as carbon tetrachloride.

Glucuronolactone: Carbohydrate. A naturally occurring substance manufactured by the human body. There is a paucity of research on its effects, and what there is has been conducted largely on rats. Here’s the problem. Rats metabolise this substance differently from humans and other mammals. No mammalian studies of glucuronolactone have been conducted, so its usefulness, and possible adverse effects, remain a mystery.

Caffeine: Stimulant. Increases heart rate and blood pressure and raises the level of harmful stress hormones in the bloodstream. In high doses, caffeine is dehydrating, addictive, and can reduce adrenal function and the body’s immune response. In pregnant women, high caffeine intake is associated with increased risk of miscarriage.

Flavourings: Adds flavour. Synthetic flavourings can be a mixes of several industrial chemicals. They are essentially the same chemicals as perfumes and can thus be considered to be neurotoxins, allergens and potential carcinogens.

Caramel: Adds colour. Caramel produced by ammonia process is a common food colouring. This type of colouring has been associated with blood toxicity in rats. There is evidence that it may damage genes, slow growth, cause enlargement of the intestines and kidneys, destroy vitamin B and cause hyperactivity.

I could've died from an over dose on energy drinks. its not the ingrediant in it that are dangerous, its wut the drink does to you. I was sent to the hospital during skool because i was shaking like crazy and felt weird after 7 energy drinks. I had a high heart rate and some other stuf was high too, but i can kill you.

I drank a 12 oz. can of Red Bull and required a EMT and hospital visit to get my heart rate back down. My heart rate sped up to nearly 200 beats a minute (my normal heart rate is about 66). The doctor said had I not called 911 I could have had a stroke. My heart was beating too fast for blood to circulate, my face and lips became white, and i lost control of my limbs. Red Bull can kill and is very bad for you. Everyone in the hospital made sure to remind me to stay away from energy drinks.

Um, my theory on all of this is MODERATION. As with ANYTHING, moderation is key. I don't know about this person above me who drank a 12 oz. can and her heart went crazy, but for the rest of you, have some common sense! More than 3 a day is just insane! Why are you drinking that many anyway? And of course it's not safe when mixed with alcohol! Alcohol doesn't exactly have medicinal effects. AND YES, if you are already super sensitive to caffeine, don't drink energy drinks! That's clearly not going to make you feel normal! They are intended to give you ENERGY. Hence the name!

I think it could be dangerous but so could anything, use in moderation & you should be okay. Saying that though, whats the point in red bull anyway. Its not like you need to drink it if your going to jump out of an aeroplane, freefall for a minute then deploy your parachute before landing safely. If you wake up & you feel drowzy & hung over you may think a coffee or a red bull might work but they make me feel worse. I start shaking & stuff. I prefere to just get some food & drink lots of water etc... maybe have a cup of tea too. Its no big deal.

You guys are such immature dipsticks. Of course red bull can kill you if you drink to much of it. SO can water if you drink to much. DUHHHH. It is called moderation for those of you with a enough sense to understand what that word means. Live you life enjoy it and anything in moderation is fine as long as you are not hurting others in doing it. And every year they come up with something new that is going to kill us or give us cancer. Coffee, soda, red bull, juice you can find something wrong with each one if you do enough research. If a can or two of red bull gets you through the day well I say great, there is not much different between that and coffee and don't the comercials say that America runs on Dunkin!!! Finally some competion for Dunkin and red bull will not turn your teeth brown!!!!

This site will inform you of what high doses of vitamin B1-B15 will do to you at high levels. I will say drinking one can a day really cant hurt. If you are drinking more than that...good luck. Like any substance you put in your body, just be responsible and not stupid!

Everything in moderation. The problem with drinks like this, or anything high in sugar or caffeine, is that it gives you this artificial 'boost' and then when you come down off of your sugar high, you're worse off than before you drank it. Specific to Red Bull, its ingredients don't consist of anything truly harmful (otherwise we don't know it yet), but again this applies to most things done in moderation. I wouldn't recommend anybody drinking too much of this stuff within a day as it's really not helping and there are better ways to get energy, like enough sleep, healthy foods, vitamin water, you can even combine foods with a good amount of carbohydrates and Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin i.e. dairy products, green leafy vegetables and whole grains) to convert those carbohydrates into energy.

Redbull isn't healthly for anyone, as suggested in previous comments. If enough is consumed then the affects could be deadly. First of all caffeine isn't great for us, but it wont hurt us too much. The deadly ingredient is Taurine, which yes is in the tissues of mammals. Our body's produce taurine which helps our body to keep going, this also helps the heart pump at a regular beat. So to much taurine can be dastardly for your heart, because it could create an irregular heart beat or cause cardiac arrest. It would take a substantial quantity of Redbull to do this.

retards, red bull is bad for you because of the chemicals in it including taurine. Red Bull is literally like drinking windex. And because of the high caffeine levels, too much of this excels your heart rate which can lead to heart attacks and strokes

Obviously you haven't read the articles about them trying to ban it in France, or how like 5 people have died from drinking too much of it no matter if it was with alcohol or not. Red bull is NOT good for you. I drink it here and there maybe one a week (IF THAT) but I do not go around acting as if it's good. COuntry's are trying to ban it, people have died from it...I mean how much more do you need in order to understand its not good for you. Some people never learn...and you obviously wont until you die from drinking too much of it, or maybe better end up in the hospital with heart problems

whats the point in just listing the ingredients?? practically anything is ok is small doses, you didn't mention HOW MUCH of some stuff is in red bull. In Ireland there's this copy of red bull called Blue Bear, its like 50 cents a can so i buy it all the time...i assume it has largely the same ingredients as red bull, well one can of it has 720% of your R.D.A of vitamin B12, which i imagine the body would struggle to cope with, some kid died in 2000 here after sharing 4 cans with his friends and playing a basketball match

People have different responses to different stimulants. Some people are allergic to peanuts, others have energy drink intolerance. It's incorrect to assume that when a handful of persons die from too much caffine that everyone will have the same issue. Everyone has his or her own response to Redbull and it is unfair and incorrect to say that redbull is deadly for all people.

Personally, I enjoy the occasional redbull and have shown no negative response toward this stimulant. Do keep in mind everyone is different and has their own response to redbull.

I would Love to see that "autopsy report" please! Just for some sort of verification that Red Bull was the reason for death. Not to be mean but I need to see facts. I see all these comments that say no this person died and this person suffered this... I would love to see cited work or Doctor's reports to back these claims. Not everything you hear and/or read is legitimate - This goes both ways. I think from reading these comments the assertation that " Red Bull is Ok" has been proved, and proved well. Now it would be nice to see all these negitive comments substantiated with evidence other then personal experience!

Also the Taurine is synthetic. It's vegan friendly so drink up. Also I work at Starbucks. One shot of espresso has about 40mg of caffiene so a grande or venti latte has the same amount of caffiene as redbull. No one has died in the store yet thankfully. Even though some people like myself drink in excess of 8-10 shots a day.

when you talked about "Taurine" you mention that its naturally produced in the body... which is true. But I dont know if youve ever heard of the saying too much of anyhting is bad. THus is the case with taurine. when you have too much of anything in your body, it can be toxic. And yes... you can OD on it. such was the case with a body builder who took 140 grams of Taurine, however, it was combined with other things. Also, there has been very limited studies on the supplement and little is known on its affects on the nervous system. When mixed with other supplements such as guarana, caffein, and ginseng... the affects are almost completely unknown. Furthermore, guarana which is also a supplement found in redbull has similar affects as caffein, thus your getting twice the amount of caffein with no warning on the label. Since it is considered a "dietary supplement" because of these ingredients, the FDA does not have to monitor the health aspects of the product, unless people are up and dying everyday. Im not saying drinking red bull is necessarily bad for you... but when drank constantly and in excess it can be extremely harmful.

Is is it a coincidence that your eponymously named kuta is urdu for dog? Kuta is also more commonly used as an insult as well.

Red Bull can be dangerous but only if you have some sort of heart condition. The taurine in Red Bull is atificial. For lever, the bbc news warning was made after three people died from "drinking Red Bull". Let me clear that up for you, two of them mixed it with large amounts of vodka and I believe one of them had an over-large heart. The third drank Red Bull AFTER a 4 hour strenuous excersise routine, Red Bull recommends drinking the can before doing something, not after.
Right well, see ya!
