Overwhelming...

So I just finished my taxes and said goodbye to the thousands of dollars I saved over the last year. I think my business has grown to the point that I can't keep doing this accounting stuff by myself because I feel totally overwhelmed right now. Half way through my taxes I started guessing, estimating and hoping I don't get audited. I just wish I knew more about how this whole hiring an accountant thing works. Or at least how it would work with my unique and rapidly growing business. Do you pay them monthly, hourly, what the hell do the do exactly? Will they save me money? Is it worth it? Is my brain going to expode if I think about this any more?!

Blah.

6 Shenanigans:

Hi...

So first off. I wanted to say that I have been reading your blog for some time now...I moved to SD in July of '04...found your blog shortly there after...you helped me this year with my halloween costume...since i am not the type to dress up...my mask said Dick "head" Cheney...Anyway, it has been great to read yours and Stefan's blogs. Back to you issue. An accountant should behelping you quarterly. It will help you not owe so much at the end of the year. He will be able to let you know quarterly how things are going, you can make IRS payments on that schedule, or start looking for ways to show "losses" to offset taxes owed. Look for a good CPA. While I don't own a biz, I have friends back in Seattle (where I moved from) who do and we all used the same tax guy, who was a CPA. I too will owe the govt this year...only a third of what it sounds like you did...but i know the pain. Good luck.

Please consult with Ron Watts, Landmark Business Services; 858 481 5809. He has the highest of reputation, has been at it for 25 years and handles hundreds of businesses. The first meeting is free, got anything to lose? Hes the most honest and hard working guy I know. Yes he will save you money but more importantly time. Your time is perhaps best spent in your area of expertise. Of course his fees are a business expense. So saving money, saving time, and having an expert on your team is priceless. Generally he does a monthly accounting, spread sheet including payroll, taxes, etc. for 50 to 150 /month. But dont quote me please. No exploding brains are allowed, way too messy.
