Drinking and Driving - Jacqueline Saburido
Now, we have all done stupid things and, thank god, we are still alive, but here is a reminder of what drinking and driving does to the innocent...
This is Jacqueline Saburido on September 19, 1999.

In December 1999, the car in which Jacqueline was riding was hit by another car that was driven by a 17-year old male student on his way home after drinking a couple of hard packs with his friends. WHat do you think happened?
After the accident Jacqueline has needed over 40 operations.
Jacqueline was caught in the burning car and her body was burned for a little under 1 minute.
With her father in 2000.
Jacqueline receiving treatment for her severely burned face.
Three months after accident.
Without a left eyelid Jacquie needs eye drops to keep her vision.
Now 20 year old, the driver of the car that hit Jacqueline cannot forgive himself for driving drunk on that night three years ago. He's aware of devastating Jacqueline Saburidos life.
Not everyone who gets hit by a drunk driver dies. This picture was taken 4 years after the accident and the doctors are still working on Jacqueline, whose body is 60% covered with severe burns.
It's pretty ironic that the drunk driver came out of this accident with hardly a scratch, but he ruined this girls life...

Some may see God at work in the spirit of the Saburido family to move on and find hope in this tragedy; in the spirit of medical team who care for her; in the spirit of those who will now be more acute to the issue of drink-driving, and maybe even prevent another tragedy because of that.

Like I said, must have had a hell of a lawyer. That's a cakewalk compared to what pain that woman is going to have to live with. 20k for destroying a life.

i viewed your video last year and i was truly touched on how much courage you had, i just lost a friend due to being drunk and another one severely injured which leaves him in the intensive care unit for three months. the driver had enough alcohol in his system to even die without getting in an accident. Jackie i am truly touched to see how far you have made it and keep up the courage i know you can do it. i can still see your beautiful face when i look at you now. keep up the courage and good luck.

Hey Summer, James here, this is a very emotionally moving page. Thank you for it. I am thankful that I never injured anyone in this way and that I quit drinking. I visited Jacqui's site and passed it on to others. And to anonymous who thinks God is not here, I would remind that God has given us free will to make choices and with those choices comes consequences.

I actually seen this story on Oprah. The first time I seen this story, I cried my eyes out. I could not believe Jaquie's strength. I think about her often, especially when I feel like things are not going right in my life.
I really amire people like Jackie who face things like this with courage. My family took care of a foster child in a similar situation, but he took his problems and made everyone elses lives miserable on purpose. People who can go through things like this courageously are the unsung heroes of the world.

Jacqueline, your story creates so many emotions it's difficult to put it all into words. There are many comments related to your story and I think several hit the mark. You are an example to the world for your spirit and courage. You are a message to those who would drink, drive and possibly adversely impact the lives of others. Without question, your story has saved the lives of many others. Through difficulty you have done more good than most people do in a lifetime. It is through adversity that God reveals character. For those who do not believe there is a God (because God wouldn't let this happen) you are missing the point. God gave his own Son's life. So why not ask, why would God let that happen? There is a MUCH bigger picture. God has touched the lives of millions through Jacqueline. Some might even call that miraculous.

Poor girl has to live that way for the rest of her life and I wish that there was something that I could do for her. Darn guy was stupid for drinking and driving and caused an innocent girl to get burned and deformed in a car accident and lost her good looks and I hope that guy who was drunk will realize what a dump idiot he is for what he caused to that poor girl.
My younger sister drove drunk once and she crashed into a pole which she was so very darn lucky that the pole didn't impale her in the face or also harm her friend who was sitting on the passenger side. My sister will never drink and drive ever again.
I should donate some money to help with Jacqueline with he medical treatments even though I don't get much money but it should help though?
I am disabled and I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)(Also known as Pseudohypertrophic)and I am on life support to live on and I pulled through from getting serverly sick which damaged my lungs and made them weaker back in 1998 and I am not able to breathe on my own anymore but I keep on fighting the good fight and try to remain strong willed with my condition.

I dont know how hard this has to be on you, but I thank you for your strenth to go on in this world, and to show others how dumb it is to be so sad over such little things. I know personally the conditions of someone who has been in a car accident. My brother was in a car accident [not drunk driving included] and is now paralyzed from the chest down. I think both of your situations are just as bad as the others just in different categories i suppose. I wish my brother had as much courage as you do to keep going on. Thank you so much. Wow. Im going to post another comment to some people on here who seem to not believe in God. God has a plan for us all, and whatever comes that is painful/ joyful to us he knew that was going to happen. Not only that but humans have taken thier own path, and dont always listen to God we follow the devil every once in a while liked drunk driving and this is what happens. I read this and it shocked me. My uncle died in a car accident and you are a very lucky girl. God works in mysterious ways. Just because there is a God doesn't mean that bad things will NEVER happen. This poor girl didn't do a THING to deserve this. Yeah you're right. But God lets things happen for a reason. What His reason for this was .. I dont know. No one will ever know. But that's the way God is. If we were able to explain why He does what He does or why He is the way He is, then He wouldn't be God.

okay i would like to say that it takes alot to nock since into me but this story really did iam very young ang got involved with alcohol and while i waz in my alcohol awarness class we watched her movie (consequenses) and after the lights came on we all had blank stairs on our faces and i dont think being kool is worth losing every thing and possible my life so now i am trying to get it approved with the school so that i can talk to kids about the effects of alchol and how it can litterly ruen your life so i would like to say i am no longer a under aged alcholic

Jaqueline has the heart of a true fighter. I think we can all agree that she posesses the strongest of the strong qualities. Willing to live through all of her hardships & fighting battle after battle are what we admire her for. "Why did God let this happen to her?", "Why did God do this to her?" are both truly engaging questions. Many, in times of hardship, turn away from God and blame him for bringing them torment, frustration, and hopelessness. However, it is no less than a fact that we are all given what is called "free will". Obviously, even an atheist would agree with this fact. Therefore, when looking at each situation with insightful and rational eyes we can come to the conclusion that we as free-willed human beings make our own decisions on what to do (for some that is to become drunk and then drive). Now, obviously, it is hard to deny the fact that god equipped us all with this free will. Therefore, out of love, we assume, did he give us freedom of choice. Some may say that by giving us freedom of choice he created evil. But that is a flawed conclusion to draw considering that he intended humans to be good and did not want to force them to follow him for that isn't fair. He wanted them to be happy, but knew that by giving them free will he could have a real relationship with them instead of forcing us all to worship him. Therefore, our own free will has enabled us to fall into evil habits and we ourselves have perverted what god had intended to be good and wonderful for us. so you see, as for the thought that we should fear god because he will send us to hell, He does not intend for that to happen. In fact, the bible states that he loves us and longs to have a relationship with us. Consequentally, he sent his son Jesus to earth to be a perfect, sinless being. When Jesus died, Satan no longer had control over keeping sinners out of heaven because Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice. because it says, "all sin and fall short of the glory of god". He does not expect us to be perfect and yet we ask why does god do this to me?And i dont see how, unless misinformed, one could look at that amazing sacrifice of love (love is not just a feeling but an action, it's something one does) and not be overcome by joy and hope. My goal is not to make you fear anything, my goal is to inform you that everyone asks why but obviously God takes the hardships and makes us triumphant in the end. It is not at the fault of god, it is at the fault of our own free will. As you can see his plan for our happiness is apparent in Jaqueline. Although perversions overtook Stephey and made him affect the lives of jaqueline and her friends, God took Jaqueline under his wing and gave her everything she needs. She is alive and has affected millions upon millions. As for Reg Stephey, it is quite possible that he is truly sorry for the choices (using free will) that he made. However, when one asks for forgiveness God listens and he knows one's heart. He is the only one who brings peace after the storm. After all, he does not start the storm, he ends it and provides shelter thru it. Who do you think starts the storm?...

I just wanted to say thank you for making yourself vulnerable to the public with posting all of your pics. Seeing how someones life can change over night is crazy. It makes me cherish everyday now, and live life to it's fullest. You rock girl and don't stop prayin to your maker.

Omg, I am quite heartbroken and really feel for this beautiful girl. Jacqui, u are very very brave and always will be a beautiful person no matter what. I have a lot of admiration for you. Your story brought out the compassion in me, the passion in me thats been fuelling for a long time about drunk drivers. I have a friend who went driving home drunk and had a minor accident and I blasted off at her saying she could have injured or killed someone, worse still, someone I love! She said no I didnt kill anyone, just damaged my car and I said thats not the point! I sent her your story and I hope this has taught her something. God didn't do this to her. A human did. And human's have free will and sometimes do bad things. But God can give her the strength to get through it. I wonder how many accidents have been prevented by people hearing this story? Probably a lot. You are a hero, and there is a special place in heaven for peopl like Jacqueline.

Jacqueline's heart-wrenching story should be something that is taught in high school, and is mandatory for graduation, but having peoples comments always start with "had the nerve to post", is kind of insulting, especially for those who have had alcohol as a major part of their upbringing...
I wonder how the guy who hit the car livs with himself everday. Jacqueline doesn't deserve that...no one does. May god be with her always and i wish her the best of luck.
I pray to the god almighty for Jacqueline. "Lord we still believe in you, but do reveal to us why you wanted this to happen".

I am very sorry you have been put through this ordeal. My heart goes out to you. I wanted to let you know that this injustice will be undone. Please look in your bible at Isaiah 35:5-7. This is describ-
ing just a little of what God's kingdom (government) will do in the very near future. Did you notice that all effects of sickness will be eliminated? Please look into the bible further for more comforting and reliable information about the future.
This adds another dimension to the unhappiness and harm that such a thoughtless and selfish action can cause. My heart and prayers go out to Jacqueline and her family.

Hi, I'm really sorry for what happened to you, I couldn't keep it dry after hearing your story. But I'm also incredibly thankful for the strength and courage God gave you to work your way in the situation you came in. Keep in mind that it is a true miracle that you survived, as many thought that you wouldn't make it. You've already achieved so much and touched so many hearts. As well as saved a lot of lives, keeping people from driving drunk. I pray that you will keep on going, may God bless you and your family. As for the ones who don't believe and post such nasty comments, insulting our creator and his work, I'm sorry for them, but will still carry them in my prayers and hope someday the love of God will also reach their hearts!!

DO YOUR PART! NEUTRALIZE A DRUNK DRIVER HOWEVER THEY ARE. JUST KNOCK THE BASTARD DOWN. IT´S EASY -AND YOU CAN HAVE A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP KNOWING YOU PROTECT SEVERAL PEOPLE.
Here, in my damn corrupt country, atrocities like hit and run, hit and kill, drunk driving, or alike is NEVER punished. The criminal is freed after pay a small amount money (few bucks).
Unfortunately I can´t see another way to avoid these tragic outcomes besides disable the alchoolic - perhaps permanently. Remember all drug addicts produces nothing - they are a waste of resources and a source of several kinds of pollutions.
I just want to say god loves you and everyone else even the drunk guy who hit you.
I am not defending his actions, but we all have made a dumb deciesion that could have in a split second changed not just our lives but others as well.maybe it happened maybe we get lucky it didnt. but we ( nobody is the judge only GOD can judge) my brother was a drug addidic ended up over dosing but he truly was the best person to know, he just had a hold on him. that he couldnt break free from. so all you who judge beware that you dont get your own strong hold. Summer, just pray for him and forgive him, Im sure you have done that already, because god has giving you such courage and strength.
Im sorry for the anguish you have been forced to live with Jacqueline, but you will always be beautiful no matter what. Your story has reduced me to tears and i can only hope to some day be as brave as you have been. You are an absolute inspiration and you offer hope to those that do not have any, thank you, you shall always be a part of my prayers.
