"Alcoholism" is an excuse
Alcoholism is not a disease. You are not born pre-determined to be an alcoholic. Drinking alcohol in excess (or at all) is your choice, why do so many people try to blame it on someone else? What a fucking piss poor excuse...
Wah, I'm lonely. Boohoo, I was abused. Sob, "enter excuse here".
If you're old enough to blame your liking to party on someone else, you're old enough to take responsibility for your own actions. You were not born with a bottle of tequila in your mouth, you chose to put it there and cry like a little bitch when someone tells you that you should probably do something more productive. And now you want me to feel sorry for you? Cry me a river, Boozy the Clown.
Oh, and let me guess. Your fat because you have fat genes, not because you consume a ridiculous amount of calories each day.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-alcohol. I'm anti-excuse. I have so much more respect for someone that say's, "I just like to get fucked up all the time", then someone that says, "I can't help it. I'm an alcoholic, so it's not my fault that I get fucked up all the time."

4 Shenanigans:
Right on the money there, girl. Maybe some people do drink because of [excuse] but the rest of us just drink becuase we like the taste, like to get drunk, have nothing better to do, are simply basket case alcoholics etc etc etc Not that I drink much these days anymore because of [excuse] ;) :D
I dunno what you'll think of this story then... a woman gets tasered EIGHT times, but she is a heavyweight, did assault someone and all after a few blunts and a WHOLE bottle of Tequila... I wonder what her [excuse] is ? :D
While I agree that excuses for bad behavior are not good this post glosses over the nuance of addiction and the variability in people. Two different people who drink the same....one becomes addicted, the other one doesn't. This can be explained by personal differences.
The Tongan dude down the street and I, a Caucasian, eat the same diet have the same workout schedule but he weighs 260 and I weigh 190. Again, personal differences.
Lifestyle choices & genetics work together to create outcomes for people. Knowing your personal "profile" in terms of metabolism, risk of addition, risk of heart disease, bio-mechanical conformity, other genetically determined risks and environmental factors will help inform decisions for people.
In fact, people who are born into families that have a history of problem drinking are at a higher risk of being a problem drinker themselves than people who come from families that don't have parents or grandparents with drinking problems. That bit of profile information shouldn't be ignored when making choices about drinking or partaking in other addictive activities that could lead to being addicted.
The same can be said about diet choices. If you have a slower metabolism or are unable to lead an active lifestyle due to poor heath or other factors consider moderating your diet to ensure a healthy weight.
Rob - While I totally agree in variances in people, genetic variances are very small. You will not become obese because of genetics. Metabolisms all run at different speeds, but they do not vary enough to make one person thin and another person morbidly overweight, if they are eating the same diet. There are rare conditions (thyroid problems for example) that can effect your weight, but genes do not determine how much fat you have on your body. Genetics will effect where on your body you will gain fat, but it's up to what you put in your mouth that determines how much fat you will carry in those areas. People love to make excuses for why they are fat, which is why the cause of obesity varies depending on who you talk to. It's simple science:
Calories you consume - energy you expend = X (a positive number ='s weight gain, a negative number ='s weight loss)
Both obesity and alcohol consumption are effected by "nurture" not "nature", which is where they get that fantastic statistic of "people with fat parents are more likely to get fat" or "people with drunk parents are likely to get drunk". If you are fed fried chicken and junk food as a child, it's likely that that is what you will feel is right to eat. If you see your parents drunk and/or alcohol is the norm around the house when you are growing up, it will feel totally normal to drink every day as an adult.
I totally stand by my original statement that "alcoholism" is an excuse, not a disease. Why are people that have real diseases (heart disease, Parkinsons) allowed to take their medication in prison, but "alcoholics" arn't allowed to drink in prison? (Hint: It's because alcoholism is an excuse for behaving badly, not a real disease...) ;)
Lever - Well, think about it. If you were drunk and some asshole came into your house and started shocking you, after you're done convulsing, would you thrust your hands behind your back and yell, "cuff me, please!". Naturally, when attacked, you would try to defend yourself. It's just human nature, which is why I think these tasers are such a joke. The cops get off on torturing (and sometimes killing) people with tasers because they know exactly how to "play the game". They know exactly what to say to make it look like they were in the right. If that cop would have beat the shit out of that women with his billy club, you know (and he knows) he would lose his job. Since tasers don't leave visible damage (even though the internal damage can be severe and long term effects are unknown), it becomes a non-issue because the media coverage isn't sensational enough without photos of a poor beat up women. I had photos of the physical burns left by a taser on my stomach and the DA convinced the jury that "everyone knows that tasers don't leave marks, so those injuries were self inflicted...". Why did the DA focus so hard on trying to convince the jury that the injuries in the pictures were not caused by the cop that attacked me? Even though he admitted to tazing me? Because without visuals of the injuries, it means that I wasn't actually hurt by that man. People are so mentally weak it's sickening.
Sorry, total tangent...haha
