Electric Shower

March11

Does this look safe to you?

If you answered “Sure, looks safe enough”, let me explain to you exactly what that is. That would be an electric shower head (what most cabinas in Costa Rica use for hot water) and those would be live wires running slightly above your head as you’re showering. Oh yes, and there is a piece of string “securely” holding the shower head above your head. After being shocked more then once by one of these mo’ fos, I no longer look to stay at cabinas that offer hot showers. You can actually feel the electricity in the water when you use these electric shower heads. Doesn’t that go against everything we’ve ever been taught about electricity and water? Oh, like the two don’t mix?! I think I’ll go swimming with a toaster….

The shower head above was at a cabina called Ocho Palmes in Mal Pais, Costa Rica. Which, by the way, I will never stay at again. Aside from being electricuted in the shower, they also have 12 roosters that sit right outside of your window and crow from 3am - 8am. By the time they stop crowing at 8am, it’s 90 degrees out and way to hot to sleep.

I really wish I could explain to you the craziness of this electric/water device.

Imagine waking up in the morning…having the chills from your sunburn and heading into the shower. After lathering up and rinsing off, your business in the shower is done but you stand there, under the warm water relaxing with your eyes closed leaning against the wall enjoying the moment.

You are now in a complete Zen state of mind. Thoughts of the clean morning surf prance through your mind so, still with your eyes closed in a zen moment, you reach your hand up to double check that all of the shampoo is out of your hair and…

bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzap!AAAAHHHH, holy shit…what the hell was that!

It was electricity shooting through your entire body from your hand that mistakingly touched the shower head to your toes which are partially submerged in the water pooling up on the shower floor.

I don’t think I am an advocate for these things, lets get a hot water heater in Puerto Rico.

I was introduce to electric showerting in Brazil, back in 1975. All went well until I tried to adjust its direction. That was one memorable shock!

I had an electric shower in brazil and had no problem with them at all. Common sense says not to touch. My dad installed a rubber gasket over the handle and we had no problem. We just knew that we had to touch the rubber gasket to turn on and off the handle. We lived there for 20 years and had no problem with it.
