Pull an "Office Space" for Wired Magazine

Wired Magazine is having a contest that requires you to destroy your most hated gadget and submit the photographic proof.

wired magazine contest

The funny thing is that this was brought to my attention (thanks Conner ;)...), just as I was contemplating smashing my new Lexmark printer ala "Office Space". At least now I have an extra excuse to destroy this POS...

Details to follow, but fireworks are legal in Puerto Rico. I might try and get this bitch airborn...

No Cell Phone

Unfortunately I havn't had a cell phone since Friday, so if you're trying to get in touch with me...well...I havn't checked my email either, so call Stefan if you need me :).

As I was rushing around trying to get ready to leave San Diego, my cell phone charger went missing and my cell phone was almost dead. So, since having my cell is pretty important, I rushed over to WalMart and bought an aftermarket charger for my LC CU500. Unfortunately, the stupid charger completely fried my phone! Howe lame is that? So not only can no one call me, but I can't call anyone else because everyones phone numbers are in my fried phone that won't turn on. Pretty lame, especially since there are no AT&T stores in Puerto Rico, so I just ordered a phone online, which should be here in the next 2 - 3 days.

I bought a gold Motorola Razr on eBay...haha. Bling, bling.

Linksys Routers are Crap

I just thought that everyone would like to know that Linksys wireless routers are crappy. Less then a year ago, the office started getting kicked off the internet more and more frequently, and the fix was to unplug and replug in the Linksys router, which would fix it for a little while. Then our computers started getting errors trying to connect to the wireless network. Then the router would kick us off the internet in 30 minute intervals. Finally we got fed up and bought a new Linksys Wireless-G Broadband router. That was less than 1 year ago and once again, the stupid new router is starting to kick us off the internet a few times a day again. What a piece of crap.

I'm going back to using the Apple Airport, which I never had a single problem with. I switched to Linksys because someone told me that they were really good routers. That someone apparently has never used an Apple product before...

(By the way, the Linksys router just kicked me off the internet again...for the 8th time today...)

Realdolls - More Like RealCreepy

I heard about RealDolls quite a few years ago, via The Howard Stern Show. Long story short, a RealDoll is the most realistic sex doll ever made. They are fully customized to the customers requests (you can pick the RealDolls features, skintone, cup size, tan lines and other things I won't get into...) and they cost a few thousand dollars. They are so realistic, it's scary. Here is an actual RealDoll:

Like I said before, RealDolls are old news and while I think they are creepy I can appreciate the artistry and engineering that goes into making a RealDoll. Now, HERE is what really brought out the creep factor for me...You have to see this documentary:

Guys and Dolls

"Guys and Dolls" is a documentary about guys that have "real" relationships with their RealDolls. Can you say mental illness much? My favorite parts:

Davecat from Michigan: "I think, um, the part my father finds really difficult about my realtionship with Chishann (his RealDoll) is the fact that she's not alive, that she's not a human being. He sees it as something unnatural and strange...When she first came into my life it was just sex, sex, sex, sex, but now it's just tapered off so that we're just there for each other. We're always there for each other..."

Another good part is where "Gordon" starts showing off his collection of guns (a glock, a shotgun, a semi-automatic) and a twohanded broad sword. Which wouldn't be so bad if the guy didn't look/sound like a complete nut job. Here's a clip of Gordon and his RealDolls, where he rattles off the reasons why RealDolls are better then women. Basically because prostitution is illegal where he lives and they'll impound his truck....ooookay....

Celebrity Beauty Secret

The most important beauty secret used by all major celebrities? A good photoshop artist.

On the left is Redbook magazine's cover featuring a "picture" of Faith Hill and on the right is the actual photo:

Can you spot the differences? They erased Faith's under eye bags, airbrushed her smile lines (and entire face), thinned her left arm, add a right arm to the picture, removed her collarbone, removed the back flab that her dress is cutting into and fixed her posture.

I don't even know why magazines even stage these elaborate photoshoots anymore. They might as well save some money and scan a celebrities drivers license photo and photoshop it onto a stock body.

Paypal Donation Counter Widget

I spent a good hour or so looking for some sort of widget that counts Paypal donations in real time and I FINALLY found it (so I'm posting it here, so others that are looking for the same thing can find it too!). The Paypal donation widget that I found is by Chipin.com and it's pretty cool. The widget is super simple to set up and this is what it looks like:

Once the widget is created, it tracks donations and contributors and people that donate can leave comments as well. All in all, this Paypal donation widget is everything I was looking for and more. Cool! :)

I made the widget above for our CA2PR.com blog as a way for our friends and family to contribute to building our house. Check out the scoop here:

Another Reason PC's Suck

I've found yet another reasons why PC's/Microsoft sucks... I just spent 3 hours driving around town looking for some stupid software program. And guess, what...I STILL DON'T HAVE IT. I went to microsoft.com and they told me that Staples, Fry's and Comp USA all carry the program I'm looking for. WELL NONE OF THEM DO!!! You would think that Microsoft would understand how import it is to keep your website up to date, but apparently not.

I have NEVER had to drive around town looking for software for any of my Macs. Macs just come with everything you need and if you do need a special program, you can just download it from Apple.com.

Microsoft has wasted so much of my time, it's retarded.

Nike Plus System

I ended up getting the Nike plus system and have been running with it for a couple of weeks now. This is what I invested:

Nike Plus shoes - $100

4GB iPod Nano - $140

Nike Plus kit - $29

Sony headphones - $60

Now, you could do it cheaper, by modifying your non-Nike Plus shoes, but I needed new running shoes any how. I also didn't have to buy $60 headphones, but the ipod buds hurt my ears and don't sound nearly as good. I ended up spending $329, but it's SO worth it. I love the Nike plus system! It's a great motivational tool and it honestly pushes me to run harder and more often. Even if I'm fading at the end of the usual 3 miles I do, I always push myself to beat my last time. Nike plus also tells you when you beat your personal records. For example after my last run, it was rattling off the details:

"You have completed your goal of 3 miles in 30 minutes, 26 seconds. Your average pace is 10.06 minutes per mile. Your have burned 275 calories. Congratulations, you have run your fastest mile to date, which is 8 minutes 15 seconds!"

Before I bought the Nike plus system, I researched it on the internet (of course ;)...) and I read somewhere that Nike plus did not work well if you ran on a treadmill. Well, I tested it out at the gym last night and it worked fine. The stats were only slightly off of the stats on the treadmill. Nike plus said I ran 1 mile and the treadmill said I ran 1.06 miles.

So, if you're feeling unmotivated to work out (like I was), get Nike plus! Swimsuit season is coming ;)...

Sueing Microsoft

Windows is the biggest pile of shit I've ever seen. Someone should file a class action lawsuit against them for false advertising (the POS never does what it's supposed to do) and cause of mental distress. Seriously. Crappiest product I've seen in forever. Fuck you, Bill Gates, get some real programmers.

I guess I'll just shut down my business since this stupid piece of shit IBM can only sometimes print my invoices. Fuckers.

Oh wait, here we go, I jiggled the fucking computer around for 45 minutes and NOW it will print. Nothing changed, just had to turn the piece of shit operating system off and on until it could find the printer that has always been there (and it's been printing to for the past month). This is seriously what you people put up with?! Bill Gates sells a broken, pathetic product and people just accept it. I guess when my customers order lingerie I'm going to send them some lace, a piece of silk, a needle and some thread. If they call my lingerie tech support I'll have some Indian dude tell them how to sew it together into the sexy lingerie I sold them, in a mear 3 hours of their time.

FUCK!

The 9/11 Tax

So this new security scanner has just been debuted at the Pheonix airport. It's an x-ray machine that lets security check you out without clothes on. But don't worry! They can't even use the machine on you, as screenings with this x-ray machine are on a voluntary basis. So I guess we should divide the security check point line into "Exhibitionists" and "Normal People & Terrorists"?

IS THIS REALLY WHAT I'M PAYING A 9/11 TAX FOR?! A $100,000 machine that is a total joke?!

It is voluntary to be screened by this x-ray machine that just shows a naked picture of yourself to security. Is someone that is actually trying to smuggle something that would be revealed by this machine ACTUALLY VOLUNTEER?!

Bulbboy might volunteer, but he isn't a terrorist, he just likes to get naked, so I don't see what good it would do at the airport...;)

10 New Careers

I thought this list: "10 Majors That Didn't Exist 10 Years Ago", was interesting, so I wanted note these 10 careers that are somewhat in their infancy:

"New media
Online media is one of the fastest-growing areas of journalism. New media majors combine traditional journalism studies with courses on the design and management of digital media.

Some programs, such as the new media program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, concentrate on computer skills and design of online media. Other programs, like the one at Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis, integrate communications and digital skills.

Biotechnology
Biotechnology combines biology and technology to solve agricultural, food science, and medical issues. It is an interdisciplinary field and is often combined with a business degree, as in the joint degree program at Johns Hopkins University. Most biotechnology degrees are at the master's level, yet bachelor's degrees in biotechnology, such as the one at Delaware State University, are starting to emerge as this field becomes more in demand.

Related fields include bioinformatics and biomedical engineering.

Organic agriculture
The first organic agriculture program in the United States began at Washington State University (WSU) in 2006. Demand for those knowledgeable in organic agriculture is growing. "Large corporations increasingly are interested in meeting the nation's growing appetite for organic foods [and] are seeking employees who understand organic agriculture systems," says Dr. Cathy Perillo, coordinator of WSU's organic agriculture program, in a press release.

This major is not widespread, but other institutions are looking into adding an organic agriculture degree program, including the University of California, Davis. The University of Florida (an MSN Encarta advertiser) also launched an organic agriculture major in 2006.

Homeland security
New degree programs in homeland security have been established since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Homeland security majors study everything from psychology to disaster relief and federal law to handling hazardous materials. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers scholarships and fellowships for homeland security majors and runs an intensive 18-month degree program at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security.

Homeland security education is expanding rapidly at community colleges. Close to 85 percent of students trained in homeland security-related fields graduate from community colleges, according to the American Association of Community Colleges.

E-business/e-marketing
This field focuses on buying, selling, and marketing items on the Internet and may also include communicating with customers, employees, and business partners. Demand for employees in this field is expected to grow faster than average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Degree programs in e-marketing are usually in universities' business schools and are more common at the graduate level. Some schools, such as the University of Akron, offer bachelor's programs in e-marketing, while others, like Missouri State University, offer a minor for business students.

Computer game design
Students playing video games in their dorm rooms can now avoid a lecture from their parents by majoring in computer game design. Computer game design programs were nearly nonexistent a decade ago. Today more than 150 colleges offer programs and courses in game design.

Some programs, such as the program in computer games development at DePaul University, focus on the programming of games while others, like the game art and design program at the Art Institute of Phoenix, concentrate on the visual design. Michigan State University is launching a Serious Game Design master's degree program in the fall of 2007 for students with "a desire to create and study games which change the world." The International Game Developers Association offers resources, including a scholarship, for students interested in game design.

Forensic accounting
The controversy surrounding recent corporate scandals has drawn attention to the expanding field of forensic accounting. While it has existed for many years, forensic accounting is now the fastest-growing field of accounting. Forensic accountants are like money detectives--they investigate suspected financial mishandling and assist in legal matters. Forensic accountants must have a broad understanding of business practices beyond standard accounting skills.

Bachelor's degrees in forensic accounting, like the program offered at Franklin University, are required for most careers in this field. Students can also earn a master's degree and post-graduate certificate through a program like the one at West Virginia University (an MSN Encarta advertiser).

Human computer interaction
Human computer interaction (HCI) majors focus on designing ways to improve human experiences and work practices with technology. HCI investigates the impact of technology on individuals and organizations. While courses in this field have been offered since the 1960s, degree programs in HCI have been growing. Human computer interaction majors are usually located in schools of computer science, but studies are multidisciplinary.

Most HCI programs are at the graduate level, such as the program at Iowa State University, but some, including the HCI program at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, have a bachelor's degree program.

Society and the environment
Society and environment majors study the interactions between society and the environment. Degree programs in this field go by slightly different names, like Indiana University's joint environmental science and public affairs degree and Columbia University's climate and society program. Students in these majors apply social science theories to environmental issues. Most programs are at the master's degree level, but programs such as the one at UC-Berkeley offer undergraduate degrees as well.

Nanotechnology
Developments in technology have made it possible to control matter at smaller and smaller levels. The field of nanotechnology works with systems at the molecular level and can be applied across many different disciplines, including physics, engineering, and chemistry. Interest in nanotechnology is growing and is being encouraged by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, organized in 1998. Most nanotechnology programs are at the graduate level, but several programs provide a background in nanotechnology studies, like the bachelor's program in nanosystems engineering at Louisiana Tech University."

Technology, technolgy, technology. This makes me feel secure about my .com bubble NOT bursting and the fact that I could teach quite a few of those courses, makes me very thankful that I got in, when I got in ;)...

Laptop of the Future?

My mom just sent me these pictures of what looks to be a conceptual laptop-type computer.

Unfortunately I have no info on what this actually is and if it is in production for the masses. Although the concept seems cool, I'm more excited about the iPhone...:D

Windows is the Retarded Step Brother of Macintosh

Okay, so I got a new intel iMac because my business outgrew Quickbooks Pro and their Enterprise version is Windows based. I just couldn't bring myself to buy an IBM, so I went for the iMac that can run both Windows and OSX. The more I work with Windows, the more I realize that Windows is the retarded step brother of Macintosh! AND, I fucking hate windows!!!!!!!

I figured that I better install my printer so I install it on the Mac side and lalalala...insert CD....lalalalala...oh, it's installed and working. Gee, that was easy. Next, let's install the printer on Windows....lalalalal...click, click....lalalal....huh?.....lalalala....hmmm ...why isn't this working..WTF is that thing?!

"Use the following port: LTP1: (Recommended Printer Port)

Note: Most computers use the LTP1 port to communicate with a local printer. The connector for this port should look something like this:"

Are you kidding my little Windows retard? I havn't seen a port like that since I was 8. Have you ever heard of a U-S-B? U-S-B stands for "Universal Serial Bus" and that is what grown ups use in their little computer boxes nowadays.

God I hate Windows.

Parallels - Moving Files from Mac Desktop to Windows

I have been messing around with my new intel iMac and it pretty freaking awesome. I installed Parallels, so I can run Windows and Mac OSX at the same time and it seems pretty seamless. I needed to move a file from my Mac desktop to the Windows desktop and unfortunately I couldn't just drag and drop (what can I say except the simplicity of Macintosh has me spoiled!). So, this is the easiest way I found to be able to move a file from the Macintosh desktop to the Windows desktop:

Under the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, then select Sharing.

Turn on Windows Sharing and it will give you an IP address for access to your Mac.

Go to your Windows desktop, launch Internet Explorer (or any browser) and type in the IP address that you were given (bookmark it for easy access in the future).

You should now be able to transfer files from your Mac desktop to you Windows desktop. TA-DAH!

Yes, I know this is an extremely nerdy post...:D

Apple's Cell Phone - iPhone

Maybe I'm always the last to know about these things, but did you know that Macintosh just came out with a cell phone?

Here is what Mac has to say about the iPhone:

"iPhone combines three products - a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching - into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone."

At the bottom of the page it says, "This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.". So it's obviously not available yet, but I'm sure it's close since it's being featured on the front page of apple.com.

I'm not sure how much the iPhone is going to retail for, but it looks like it's going to be offered by Cingular. I'm a big fan of Apple products, so this may just be the phone that's going to switch me over into the phone/pda realm...Oh, and while I was at Apple.com, my finger slipped and I bought a 20" iMac. Whoops! ;)
